IBO led by Allison Edberg Nyquist

IBO concertmaster Allison Edberg Nyquist and her friends from the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra will celebrate the four seasons with Vivaldi’s beloved concertos, as well as showing you there are more than four seasons to love.

It may be winter in Indianapolis, but the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra celebrates all the seasons in a pair of January concerts entitled Fantastic Four Seasons +.

Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved The Four Seasons is the centerpiece of the program; the seasonal theme is fortified with additional music for the seasons by the celebrated Jean-Baptiste Lully and an exciting new find, Giovanni Antonio Guido.

As Allison Edberg-Nyquist, IBO concertmaster and leader of Fantastic Four Seasons +, says, “In the dead of winter it is human nature to dream of the return of spring.  Come and enjoy the musings of Vivaldi, Lully, and Guido on the joy and pain of each of the Fantastic Four Seasons.  Using music text painting, these composers take us out into the fields in spring to hear bagpipes, to harvest celeb rations where the wine flows freely, through summer storms and wintry winds.

Four different violinists from the IBO will each perform one of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons; “Spring” features Janelle Davis, “Summer” Martha Perry, “Autumn” Brandi Berry, and “Winter” Allison Edberg-Nyquist.

The four Italian sonnets, perhaps by Vivaldi himself, on which the concertos are based are incorporated into the IBO’s presentation.

Music from France, Lully’s Ballets des Saisons, is inspired by the dance during the reign of Louis XIV and reminds us that even in January we can dream of August.

Guido’s Scherzi armonici sopra la quattro staggioni dell’ anno (“Harmonic scherzos on the four seasons of the year”) are also based on poetry, perhaps by Guido himself, but in this case in French rather than Italian, as Guido made his living in Paris.

Two performances of Fantastic Four Seasons + are scheduled: 7:30 pm, Thursday, January 15, in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center at the University of Indianapolis, 1400 E. Hanna Ave., Indianapolis; and 7:30 pm, Friday, January 16, at the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., Indianapolis.

Admission is $20 general; $15 senior; and $10 student.

All University of Indianapolis faculty, staff, and students are admitted free to the Uindy performance on Thursday, January 15.
